Introduction
The City of OKC has hired the Institute for Quality Communities to conduct a study of placemaking features and urban design policy in the heart of the Western Avenue urban commercial district between NW 36th and NW 48th Streets. Our goal is to set the groundwork for a more walkable, vibrant, and prosperous Western Avenue corridor.
Team
Our team consists of faculty and students from the University of Oklahoma College of Architecture and Institute for Quality Communities. We are also working closely with the City of Oklahoma City under the guidance of Urban Redevelopment Planner Kim Cooper-Hart.

First Steps: Field Work and Community Input
Our first step is to start gathering information about the Western Avenue corridor between NW 36th and NW 48th Streets. This will include information about the physical environment as well as input from stakeholders and community members about how they experience the area and how they envision the area’s future.
Field Work
We will be visiting the core of the Western Avenue corridor frequently to collect information like:
- Parking counts
- Pedestrian counts
- Street measurements
- Buildings and businesses
If you see some college students measuring Western Avenue, stop and say hello!

Neighborhood Association Meetings
Throughout the process, our team will meet with neighborhood and business associations surrounding the study area.
Public Charrette
On the evening of April 25, we will hold a public charrette process which will allow community members to actively participate in directing the final product of the study. More details to follow.
