As creator of the Better Block movement, Jason Roberts is a proponent of fast, experimental, citizen-driven community design. His demonstrations energize and inspire communities across America. In 2012 the White House and US Department of Transportation recognized Roberts as a Champion of Change.

Ron Frantz: IQC in Oklahoma

Ron Frantz has made a career out of becoming personally involved in Oklahoma communities through his expertise in architecture and historic preservation. Ron shares his very personal story of becoming engaged and making a difference where it matters. His inspirational stories focus on small town Oklahoma, troubled city neighborhoods, and the aftermath of the 1995 bombing of Oklahoma City.

As an Oklahoma Main Street Program architect, Ron Frantz helped more than 40 Oklahoma communities explore the potential for revitalization and historic preservation in their downtown areas. He is now the Director of the Institute for Quality Communities’ Great Plains Studio and an Associate Professor in the OU College of Architecture.

As preferences shift toward walkable communities and the last few decades of development begin to age, Ellen Dunham-Jones is cataloguing examples of how suburbs are being “reinhabited, redeveloped, and regreened.” Dunham-Jones tells stories about converting dead malls to vibrant downtowns, or old office parks to new main streets.

As the co-author of Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs (2008), Ellen Dunham-Jones is known for her work in aging suburbs. The book includes case studies of parking lots, malls, and cul-de-sacs that have been redeveloped into vital neighborhood centers.
