Black Cowboy Museum: Culture, Community, Legacy

The Institute develops concepts for a Black Cowboy Museum in Spencer, OK

Spencer, OK | Fall 2023

The Black Cowboy Museum is a tribute to the often overlooked history of Black Cowboys in the American West. Its design concept combines traditional Western aesthetics with contemporary inclusivity, serving as a bridge between past and present. The museum aims to educate, reflect, and celebrate the cultural legacy of Black Cowboys, honoring their struggles and triumphs. Future expansion is considered, and community engagement is emphasized, with activities like the wish wall and mapping exercises facilitating input from diverse community members. Ultimately, the museum seeks to rewrite the narrative of the American West and become a beacon of inspiration and connection for future generations.
