Lexington Wayfinding: Bridges to Public Health

Lexington, Oklahoma | Fall, 2022

In 2022, IQC received a submission to its annual request for proposals from the Cleveland County Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) to develop wayfinding interventions for the town of Lexington, Oklahoma. Lexington sits twenty miles south of Norman, just east of Purcell and the South Canadian River. Home to some 2,000 residents, Lexington hopes to realize better public health outcomes through wayfinding which promotes active transportation, and which improves mobility for students who walk or bike to school.

After meeting with stakeholders, walking the town, researching, and engaging with local students, the team developed recommendations for aesthetics, content, and locations of wayfinding interventions in Lexington. These recommendations address the following elements of wayfinding:

• Content: what information residents find most useful in wayfinding signage.
• Style: what aesthetic qualities residents find most pleasing and appropriate for the town.
• Format: what structural characteristics residents prefer.
