With insight from her extensive career in education, Torres leads the strategic direction and operations of the nonprofit, Calle Dos Cinco in Historic Capitol Hill, focused on the revitalization of the Capitol Hill business district.

Her passion to improve educational outcomes for her community of south Oklahoma City led her to embark in a 25+ year career in public education.  In 2004 Torres stepped into the leadership role of School Principal at Jefferson Middle School and became Oklahoma City Public School’s first Latina Principal.

Having honed her community engagement strategies from her work with families and businesses as a public-school administrator in the urban school district of OKCPS she recognizes and embraces the city’s cultural growth by engaging the local community in investing in and moving back into the Historic Capitol Hill neighborhood either through a new business or activating community volunteer led events.

Following the devastating hurricanes of Irene and Maria on the Island of Puerto Rico a national call was made by the Secretary of Education of Puerto Rico to develop a team to support the recovery and restructure of the education system.  Gloria was selected to consult with the Secretary on reimagining community engagement from the education perspective.

Her pursuit of increased educational outcomes for all children continued even after leaving the OKCPS district.  In 2014 Gloria was appointed to the Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education, the state’s largest school district.  Once again becoming the first Latina to hold this elected position, also making her the first Latina to hold an elected position in the state of Oklahoma.
